Snow Angel

Sculpture for CancerCare Manitoba’s “Bears on Broadway” community project, cast concrete, rebar, foam, poly mesh, acrylic stucco, cement, silica glaze coating, calligraphy. The 17’ wings of the angel become a location for honorariums with over 2000 sponsor names hand lettered on the feathers. The sculpture takes the idea of the child's game of making snow angels in the snow and transforms it into a mythical guardian spirit animal. The look of the piece references renaissance silverpoint drawings, drapery studies by Leonardo Da Vinci, and portions of Michelangelo’s ‘Pieta”.
The polymorphic shape of the wings is formed like a saddle- bolted onto the back of the concrete bear, formed out of commercial grade exterior wall materials with a smooth surface to accommodate brush calligraphy.
